Miyamoto New Zealand was contracted by the client to undertake a 25m monopole on a steep bank in Ponsonby, Auckland. The site was particularly challenging due to the sloping ground, steep bank and the large scale tower.
The initial design was to excavate the whole bank; this solution would have involved a lot of soil removal and also require the implementation of a very large retaining wall.
After consideration, Miyamoto proposed to elevate the tower on to the bank and provide a piled solution with a smaller retaining wall. This solution meant a reduction in the amount of retaining needed and soil removed. Miyamoto provided geotechnical engineering expertise for the soil and retaining wall along with structural guidance and calculations to this complicated site. Drafting work was also incorporated to ensure the site was as compact as possible, whilst allowing access to the cabinets and tower.
