The Sanctum Apartments’ initial assessment revealed susceptibility to base rocking under seismic actions, which could necessitate piled foundations at 40% of the New Building Standard (NBS). To address this, Miyamoto NZ performed a Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) time history analysis using their proprietary code to transfer the structural model from ETABS to ABAQUS. This advanced approach allowed for a thorough evaluation of the structure’s interaction with the soil. The analysis showed that piling was unnecessary, resulting in cost savings of approximately NZD 2,000,000. Additionally, allowing for limited rocking reduced the demand on the structure.
